Malibu is a paradise for anyone who loves the outdoors, especially if you enjoy hiking with stunning views. The combination of coastal cliffs, rolling hills, and lush canyons makes Malibu a top destination for wellness enthusiasts like us who want to connect

with nature and recharge. If you’re looking for the best hikes in Malibu, I’ve selected my top five trails that offer a mix of challenge, beauty, and peaceful moments. Each one has something unique to offer, whether it’s ocean views, wildflowers, or quiet forest paths.

1. Solstice Canyon Trail

Solstice Canyon is one of my favorite spots because it combines history, nature, and easy access. This trail is perfect if you want a moderate hike with rewarding views and a bit of exploration. The path leads you through shaded groves and past the ruins of an old stone house, which adds a touch of mystery to the walk. The waterfall at the end of the trail is a refreshing sight, especially after a light rain.

  • Distance: About 3 miles round trip

  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate

  • Highlights: Waterfall, historic ruins, shaded canyon

This trail is great for a morning hike when the temperature is cooler. You’ll find plenty of spots to pause and meditate or just enjoy the sounds of nature. It’s also dog friendly!

2. Escondido Falls Trail

If you want to see one of the tallest waterfalls in the Santa Monica Mountains, Escondido Falls is the hike for you. The trail starts off easy but gets a bit steeper as you approach the falls. So lush and so green, if you go after it rains (which is a rarity so make sure to go if you have the chance!)! The waterfall itself cascades down in two tiers, creating a beautiful backdrop for photos.

  • Distance: 3.8 miles round trip

  • Difficulty: Moderate

  • Highlights: Two tier waterfall, wildflowers, shaded forest

  • Make sure to wear sturdy shoes because the trail can get slippery near the falls. This hike is especially popular in spring when the waterfall is at its fullest and the flowers are blooming.

3. Point Dume Cove Trail

For breathtaking ocean views and a chance to spot dolphins or sea lions, Point Dume Cove Trail is unbeatable. This trail is shorter but offers dramatic cliffs and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The cove below is perfect for a swim or a picnic after your hike. The trail is mostly exposed, so bring sunscreen and plenty of water.

  • Distance: 2.5 miles round trip

  • Difficulty: Easy

  • Highlights: Ocean cliffs, wildlife spotting, beach access

This hike is ideal for a sunset walk. The golden hour light makes the cliffs glow, and the ocean breeze feels incredibly refreshing. It’s one of the best hikes in Malibu if you want a quick escape.

4. Mishe Mokwa Loop to Sandstone Peak

For those who want a more challenging adventure, the Backbone Trail to Sandstone Peak is a must. Sandstone Peak is the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains, and the hike rewards you with sweeping views of Malibu, the ocean, and even the Channel Islands on a clear day. The trail is well marked but steep in some sections, so it’s best for experienced hikers or those looking to push themselves a bit.

  • Distance: 6.5 miles round trip

  • Difficulty: Strenuous

  • Highlights: Highest peak in the range, panoramic views, diverse terrain

You’ll pass through chaparral, and shaded groves. This trail is one of the best hikes in Malibu for a full day outdoor experience. I felt so accomplished after this hike.

5. Malibu Creek State Park Rock Pool Trail

Malibu Creek State Park offers several trails, but the Rock Pool Trail stands out for its natural swimming hole. The trail is relatively flat and easy, winding through oak woodlands and grassy meadows. The rock pool is a perfect spot to cool off after your walk, especially in the warmer months.

  • Distance: 4 miles round trip

  • Difficulty: Easy

  • Highlights: Natural swimming hole, oak trees, open meadows

This trail is great for a relaxing day out with friends or solo time to release and align. The park also has picnic areas and restrooms, making it convenient for a longer adventure.
