Why Your Home is Your Sanctuary (And Why I’m Never Letting Someone Else Control Mine)

We’re told that home is where the heart is, but I’ve decided that home is actually where your peace of mind lives.
When your nervous system is in "Alert Mode" (technically called the Sympathetic Nervous System AKA fight or flight), your body is essentially preparing for a battle.
In a stressful home life, this can sometimes be a constant feeling. Battle doesn't always mean physical, threats to your nervous system can come from a conversation or a tense living situation. These make your brain react the same way it would to a physical predator.
What Happens Inside Your Body
System | What it feels like | Why your body does it |
Heart | Racing, pounding, or "flipping" in your chest. | To pump oxygenated blood to your limbs so you can move fast. |
Lungs | Shallow, chest-level breathing or feeling "short of breath." | To get more oxygen into your blood quickly. |
Muscles | Tight shoulders, clenched jaw, or "bracing" your stomach. | Your muscles are "primed" and ready to spring into action. |
Digestion | "Butterflies," nausea, or a total loss of appetite. | Digestion is "non-essential" in a crisis, so your body shuts it down to save energy. |
Eyes | Tunnel vision or being hyper-aware of every movement. | Your pupils dilate to let in more light and help you spot threats. |
Skin | Cold hands, sweating, or feeling suddenly flushed. | Blood is pulled away from your skin to your core and muscles. |
Your Home = Your Nervous System
If you’ve ever felt like you were "walking on eggshells" in your home, your body was in survival mode. You can’t truly heal or relax if you’re worried that a fight or a mood swing could happen suddenly.
Healing your nervous system requires a space where you don't have to "brace" yourself. You'll be able to breathe, function, and thrive when your body and mind leave this state.

My Non-Negotiables
I have a few rules for myself to make sure my home stays safe:
Own My Space: Whether it’s your name on the lease or your own savings, never be in a position where someone else can tell you to leave your own home.
The "Key" Rule: Only people who contribute to your peace should have a key to your sanctuary.
Trust Your Gut: If you don't feel like you can fully relax your shoulders when you walk through your front door, something needs to change.
It takes time, a lot of time, (sometimes weeks or months) for your body to realize it doesn't need to stay "braced" anymore. The first night where you truly sleep deeply is your nervous system finally saying, "We're safe now." This is non-negotiable.
Release what's putting you in fight or flight mode. Protect your nervous system. Protect your home. It will literally save your life.
